This Week I Learned
My wedge shots always spin right.
Turns out, my wedge shots always spin to the right—and it’s by design. My coach let me in on the secret: the way he teaches wedge play makes this spin happen every time. I’ve been following his instructions to the letter but never realized this little detail. Now that I know, I’ll be adjusting my aim to account for that extra spin. Small changes, big impact!

>$20 Training Aids
Golf training aids are HUUUGE business. Like most of you, I already own way too many—but let’s be real, who can resist an inexpensive gadget?
Golf Sidekick features a few training aids in this video that deliver massive bang for your buck, all under $20. It’s a must-watch because Matty not only reviews these tools but also shows you how to use them—something most videos tend to skip over.

Alignment Sticks: Don’t have them yet? Go grab some—these are an absolute must-have.
Tripod & Pool Noodle: My coach once fixed my swaying by having me press a pool noodle/alignment stick against my head, and it worked wonders. Matty’s DIY version gets the job done, but honestly, I wouldn’t be caught dead with that contraption on the range. My advice: just get a friend to hold a stick near your head for a few swings—that’s plenty.
Impact Bag: I’m seriously considering getting one of these. You can even use it in your garden (until your spouse intervenes).
Grip Trainer: These little guys attach to your grip to help correct any issues. A poor grip is often the root cause of bad swings, so for under $20, it’s a great investment.
Magnetic Aiming Stick: This attaches to your clubface to show you where you’re really aiming. I suspect my aim is off, so I convinced my pro to get one and let me borrow it. It’s the kind of thing you might not need often, but it could make a big difference when you do.
Digital Level: Useful for understanding how a few degrees of slope actually look, but I think I’ll pass on this one for now.
Wrist Trainer: You could use a ruler under your glove or get this specific glove to help with lead wrist cupping. Definitely intriguing.
Towel: You already have one, so it’s basically free. Use it as a target when practicing your wedge shots—great for dialing in your accuracy.
I’d strongly advise you to watch the video as the drills and tips for every training aid is where the real value is in this video.

This quick video offers some surprisingly catchy musical advice on using your arms during the backswing. Even if nothing else, it’s a great way to confirm that your arms are doing exactly what they should. Give it a watch and get in tune with your swing!
