Plus: Golf Mind vs. Reality

Whatā€™s Hoppinā€™? Stock up on mosquito spray. Now.

What we'll cover this week

  • Backyard Golf Course: Is it worth it?

  • Mind vs. Reality: Humiliating.

  • Remember the Basics: Grip, Arms, Stance.

Estimated read time: 6 minutes

This Week I Learned

Mosquitos can be a perfectly valid reason to call it quits on a round of golf.

Just ask my friend, who bailed on hole 3 after we were SWARMED because he forgot to apply mosquito repellent. So, lesson learned ā€“ thereā€™s no ā€œtoo much mosquito sprayā€. Ever.

Useless golf videos weā€™ve watched this week, so you donā€™t have to:

The Perfect Backyard

Every golferā€™s dream: your own golf course. (Okay, itā€™s my dream, but maybe yours too? šŸ° )

So, this guy built one in his backyard, and you won't believe what goes into maintaining it financially and time-wise. Check out this video to see the full setup.

Video length: 23:14

TL;DW:

If youā€™re in a chill mood to watch a guy maintain his backyard golf course for a week, this is the video you need to watch. Thereā€™s nothing really to learn this week but to enjoy what golf (sometimes) is all about - enjoying nature and having fun with your friends and fellow golfers.

Got a cold drink nearby? Grab it. This is the perfect video to watch while kicking back and relaxing.

P.S. If youā€™d rather learn how to hit longer shots, keep scrolling. Danny Maude is back with some killer tips! šŸš€

Mind vs. Reality

Itā€™s always the same. ā€œVisualize a great shot,ā€ they say. But with our skill level, visualization isn't going to save us. That humiliating tracer is just the cherry on top for pure comedic gold.

Deals for the Feels

Make your wallet sweat and save some money at the same time šŸ’øšŸ”„

  • Get your shopping game on! This event has some cool discounts on everything except balls, but the real gems are in fashion and bags, with discounts ranging from 30% to 60%. For instance, my personal favorite, the Ping Hoofer bag, is $50 off! It's the best bag (for me). Check it out and save big!

  • Get a grip on your game! This is the best training aid to improve your grip position. If your gripā€™s position is too weak or too strong, your swing will suffer, and you'll slice and hook it left and right. Trust me, Iā€™ve been there! My coach introduced this trainer to me, and it had a huge impact. Whether you interlock, use 10 fingers, or any other grip style, this grip trainer works wonders. Itā€™s also the #1 bestseller in training aids on Amazon šŸ™Š

  • Fresh off the press and ready to impress! This more toned-down special edition is brand new. Looking for something a bit flashier? There are still a few (orange) Pinehurst balls left, perfect for making a statement on the green (or losing it in the bushes).

  • GoodGood just dropped their Yeti collab and, well... it's okay. It's Yeti Ramblers, Tumblers, etc., just with GG branding. Not the most exciting release, but hey, maybe itā€™s your thing. Take a look and decide for yourself.

* Please note: If you purchase through our link to Amazon, we receive a small kickback. Thank you for supporting our small newsletter.

Remember the Basics

Danny Maude is back with another excellent tutorial on getting your basics right: grip, arms, stance.

Video length: 12:43 (1.5-2x speed would work)

  • Grip Check - Your grip might be corrupted šŸ¤Æ Improper hand placement could be why youā€™re hooking or slicing your shots. Danny uses the SKLZ grip trainer (yep, the one with the discount we mentioned above) to teach proper hand placement. It's time to relearn this basic skill and start hitting straighter shots!

  • Hinge Your Arm ā€“ Keep that elbow flexible during the downswing. This prevents those dreaded chicken wings and makes your swing much more fluid. I tried this after we covered it a few weeks ago, and trust me, it's a game-changer.

Stance Width Adjustment ā€“ Guilty as charged! If youā€™re like me and use the same stance width for all your clubs, itā€™s time to change it up. Instead of just moving the ball position, move your back foot back a (little) bit with each longer club. To nail the perfect stance for each club, check out the video.

Quick Bites for the Road

šŸ‘‘ Playing the Hardest Holes at Royal Troon - Iona Stephen teams up with the head pro of Royal Troon to tackle some of the course's toughest holes. The proā€™s commentary is incredibly insightful and could seriously up your game. Ready for a masterclass in course management?

šŸ–¤ Why You Shouldnā€™t Play Matte Golf Balls - Hereā€™s a fun fact: matte golf balls might be killing your distance. Due to lower friction from the matte coating, you achieve less distance. Basically, matte balls cut your spin in half, which means they won't travel as far. Stick to the shiny ones for better performance!

šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø 7 Rule Changes That Make Golf Easier - Did you know? There have been some rule changes in the last few years that you mightā€™ve missed. This quick refresher covers seven changes that could make your life on the course a whole lot easier. Time to brush up and play smarter, not harder!

Under Pressure

The pressure is on when the scenery is so beautiful. We all know how this endsā€¦

Quiz answer

There were fewer golf courses in 2023 than in 2006. In fact, 12% fewer courses to be exact. Mostly, itā€™s the cheaper courses (less than $40 greens fee) that were hit. Quite curious, especially with the recent golf boom, right?
