This Week I Learned

Itā€™s the Circle of Swing

Golf has a funny way of humbling us. Just when you think youā€™ve finally nailed your swing, you realize thereā€™s still so much more to learn. You start with the basics (like shallowing your path), and just as you feel like youā€™ve got it, you discover that it was only the beginning. It turns out thereā€™s always another layer to peel backā€”like me realizing I could still narrow my driverā€™s path even more. The learning path is a circle.

Useless golf videos weā€™ve watched this week, so you donā€™t have to:

Creating Compression

Want to hit longer, better shots? Itā€™s all about compressionā€”getting that downward pressure into the ball at contact. More compression means longer (and more accurate) shots, which means lower scores, and we all know what lower scores mean: happiness. Compression = Happiness. Simple math.

Watch the video to learn to be happy:

  • Open Clubface During Upswing: Lots of us (guilty šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļø) rotate our wrists at the start of our backswing, which messes everything up and forces us into a chain of awkward micro-adjustments just to make decent contact.

The Fix: Imagine wearing a watch on your non-dominant arm (unless you are wearing a watch, then your imagination gets a rest). Keep the watch face pointing toward the ground for as long as possible during your backswing. If you hold that feeling through impact, youā€™ll get better compression. Thereā€™s also a drill with an alignment stick in the video thatā€™s worth trying.

  • Upper Body Hanging Back: Dropping your head back shifts the arc of your swing backward, making you hit up on the ball instead of downā€”bye-bye, compression.

The Fix: The video uses a Swingplate to give feedback when the head moves too much, but a cheaper version is to have a friend hold an alignment stick beside your head. Youā€™ll know immediately if youā€™re doing it right, and that feeling will help you self-correct later. Just rememberā€”use the rounded end of the stick next to your head; we donā€™t need any tragic alignment stick incidents out there!

  • Unloading Your Angles Too Early: You need to keep your arm angles loaded for as long as possible. Straightening your arms too soon forces you to make awkward hand adjustments and lose momentum before impact.

The Fix: Try the "Pump Drill." Start your downswing, but stop at the 3 oā€™clock position, then reset and repeat. Itā€™s easier to understand when you see it in action, so jump to the Pump Drill in the video for a clear demo.

I love simple, universally applicable tips that can be remembered with body cuesā€”thatā€™s why the watch face tip is my favorite. Combine these strategies with the Ben Hogan tips below, and you'll see your distance increase in no time.

10 MOST BIZARRE Golf Moments

Okay, Iā€™ll be realā€”the thumbnail is definitely clickbait. BUT (and this is a big "but")... the video still delivers some seriously bizarre and hilarious golf moments. From the chaos of the Phoenix Open to unlikely heroes and hooks straight into the audience to good olā€™ John Daly, this video has everything.

Deals for the Feels

The Black Friday Frenzy is over, and most of those juicy discounts are gone. Butā€¦ and this is a big butt...

  • Okay, itā€™s just $10 discount on two dozen ProV1s, so letā€™s call it a medium-sized butt. Still, every bit helps, right?

  • This oneā€™s pretty coolā€”you get to open a new door each day to reveal sweet discounts. Todayā€™s deal? -17% on balls. Niceee.

  • Are you kidding me?! A new limited-edition Scotty drops next week, and it might just be one of the most beautiful putters Iā€™ve ever seen. Iā€™d still 3-putt from inside 6 feet, but Iā€™d do it in style. Check out the announcement video:

Ben Hoganā€™s Swing Key

Honestly, I never really got what proper hip movement was supposed to look likeā€”until I watched this. Ben Hogan makes it look so effortless in this short clip. I finally understand how fluid the hips need to be and, more importantly, when they should start doing their magic (spoiler: way earlier than I thought!).

Definitely a must-watch if you want to level up your swing.

Quick Bites for the Road

šŸ¤‘ Rick Shiels is Worried for YouTube Golf - Rick and Peter Finch dive into a 10-minute discussion about YouTube golfā€™s current state, and honestly... I donā€™t really agree. Rick sounds a bit too much like ā€œback in my day...ā€ for my liking.

šŸ“ā€ā˜  How Tahoma Hijacks the Golf Industry - Tahoma seems to have cracked the code on influencer marketing, and theyā€™re using it to steal market share from the big boys. Some bigger brands are waking up, but Tahoma is already making waves.

Quiz answer

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an avid golfer, had a putting green installed outside the Oval Office. Therefore, I welcome President Eisenhower as the first Honorary Member of the Rabbit Golf Addicts Club.

Sincerely, your Magic Rabbit.

Leader through the rabbit hole. Is wondering if his golf club uses new range balls. He canā€™t hit as far as last season. Must be the equipment!
