Mastering the Mental Game

We all know mastering the mental game is even more crucial than having the perfect swing. You might swing better than Rory or outdrive Bryson, but your HCP will stay sky-high without the right mindset.

That's where this week's must-watch video comes in:

Video length: 8:32

TLDW

  • Visualization: Picture where you want your ball to go, and let muscle memory do the rest. Every pro I’ve talked to swears by this tip.

  • Be Confident: Approach each shot believing you’ll bomb it. Doubt is a killer—swing with swagger!

  • Emotional Stability: Forget the last shot. Focus on the current one. You can’t change the past, but you can shape the future.

  • Routine: Develop a pre-shot routine, even a simple one. It keeps your mind from wandering into “what if” territory. Negative thoughts lead to negative shots.

  • No Technical Thoughts on the Course: Save those for the range. On the course, start your routine and let your body take over.

Mastering Mental Game Pt. 2

Don’t think of the color yellow.

Oh, you did think of the color yellow? We all know that party trick, and it’s also the biggest enemy of a solid round. We start overthinking, talking to our demons, and that usually leads to the downfall of our marvelous game plan and everything we’ve worked on during training.

This video shows how to evolve from an outcome-based golfer to a process-oriented golfer and stop thinking about the color yellow.

TLDW

  • Outcome-Based Golfers: “Don’t hit the OB,” “Oh boy, I’m playing so well, I can win this thing, just don’t screw up now,” “I always hit into the water hazard.” It boils down to too many thoughts in your head, especially harmful negative thoughts.

  • Process-Oriented Golfers: Repeat a mantra. “Visualize the shot, stick to your routine, and commit” is the one presented in the video. It doesn’t really matter what mantra you repeat as long as you don’t let your mind wander during pre-shot until after you’ve launched the ball.

I know some long-hitters whose driving mantra is “Keep the head behind the ball”. Simple as that. We all know our thoughts should be as simple and focused as possible before and during the swing. So, if these guys use a mantra, we should definitely use one, too.

Check out the other examples in this video to better understand when you’re an outcome-based golfer and how you can benefit from shutting your mind out.

You’ll still have bad shots occasionally, but at least you won’t carry your suckage to the next hole (and beyond)!
