This Week I Learned

“If you have a handicap of 20+, you have no business playing golf. If you have a handicap below 20, you have no business.” - Old Klingon Proverb

Lag For More Distance

Smashing a ball down the horizon feels great. Period.

One of the keys to greater distance is lag – that’s the angle created between your lead forearm and the club shaft during the downswing. If your hands open too early, you’re sacrificing speed. Basically, your hands should lag behind your body to create maximum lag or compression.

There’s an insanely easy drill to create lag:

TL;DW:

  • Push the Handle Away – Coach Carolin’s tip is to create the feeling of pushing the handle away from your body as you initiate the downswing. That’s it - brilliant and easy.

Try it without a club while you watch the video and realize what a MAJOR difference this subtle movement makes.

The movement is harder to describe than it is to watch the video. So just…👇

Deals for the Feels

Off-Season Deals Are Starting to Fly In! 🏌️‍♂️💸

  • This highly-rated (4.4 stars) hitting mat is now reduced! Check the “Apply Coupon” box for an extra 10% off, bringing the price down to just $27. Don’t miss out!

  • Amazing sale on Nike items! If you’re in the market for a new golf shirt, grab the Dri-Fit Victory Polo. It’s the best golf shirt I own.

  • Golfdiscount is running a closeout sale on the entire TSR (1-4) range, including drivers, fairways, and hybrids. Perfect time to upgrade your gear!

  • Hate dirty golf balls? This handy gadget clips to your bag, so you always have a ball washer nearby. My friends laughed at it, but they appreciated it when their balls were all muddy. Keep your balls clean!

Outdated Rules

Golf rules change regularly, so staying up-to-date is essential.

If you’ve been playing for a while, you (and your friends) might be playing under harder rules without even knowing it. Here are 7 rules that have changed in the last few years to make your rounds a bit easier.

Video length: 11:46 (video starts at 1:21 without the intro)

TL;DW

  • Loose Impediments in Bunkers: You can now move loose impediments in bunkers. It used to be you had to play it as it lies, but now you can move whatever you like – just be careful not to move your ball (or at least replace it). This rule applies to penalty areas as well.

  • Distance Measuring Devices: They’re allowed everywhere now, but your local committee can enforce a local rule to forbid them. If that’s the case, you might want to look for another country club!

  • Accidentally Moving Your Ball: No penalty if you accidentally move your ball while looking for it (or in any other situation). Just replace it where it was or where you estimate it was.

  • Straight Line Out of Bunker: You can move your ball out of a bunker on a straight line back from the flag with just one penalty stroke. Sometimes this is a better option than hacking away at an impossible shot (might come in handy if you ever play Royal Troon 🤷‍♂️).

  • Accidental Double-Hit: No penalty for the dreaded double-hit anymore. You’re punished enough with that poor shot!

  • Mark Your Putts: Once you’ve marked your ball position on the green, it doesn’t matter if external forces like wind move your ball. You can always replace it to where you marked it or estimate where that spot was (when you’ve already picked up the ball marker).

Quiz answer

To play at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California, you have to shell out $500,000 in initiation fees, making it the most expensive country club in the world. I guess I’ll stop complaining about the price of a bucket of balls at my club now.
