Plus: Are Today's Golf Balls Overpowered?

What we'll cover this week

  • Reading Your Lie - Finally, someone explains it

  • Pressure Shot - Watchful eyes of mean people

  • Overpowered Golf Ball - Is it hurting the game?

This Week I Learned

Last week’s putting drill is game changer!

Leaning an alignment stick on your hip to check movement? Absolute game changer. I thought I had a stable stance when putting, but after trying the drill on the practice green, I realized my hips were all over the place. If you haven’t given this drill a shot yet, do it! Instant improvement.

Reading Your Lie

Breaking 70, 80, 90, or 100 requires different skills, but one thing is universal: no copy-and-paste shots. Each shot is unique—even if you’re standing in the same spot as your last one. Wind and external forces are important, but the lie of your ball is one of the most critical factors in shaping your next move.

Your stance plays a big role too. For instance, if you’re on an uphill lie, you should lower your grip on the handle, while a downhill lie requires a higher grip.

But here’s the part I never fully grasped: how the ball's lie in the grass affects the shot. This video dives deep into how the lie impacts what happens next.

Video length: 4:35

TL:DW

The video focuses on green-side pitches, but the concepts apply to every shot between the tee box and the green.

  • Normal Lie: On fairway grass, you’ll get medium spin and more rollout after landing.

  • Tight Lie: From a grassless patch or very short grass, you’ll get high spin and a low trajectory, and the ball will stop quickly.

  • Rough Lie: Making clean contact is tough when hitting from the rough. Your ball will ascend steeply and descend sharply, often coming to a quick stop after landing.

What to do with that info?

  • Normal Lie: Since you’ll get more rollout, plan to land the ball shorter. Trust me, this would’ve saved me from rolling into water hazards more than once! Estimate the extra room for the runout.

  • Tight Lie: Ever have the ball rocket off your club and miss your target by a mile? That’s probably the tight lie at work. To control this, put the ball farther back in your stance to lower the trajectory.

  • Rough Lie: Most of the time, punching out is your best bet. To get back into play, put a little more weight on your heels, grip down, and take a half-swing.

Key takeaway: Always assess the lie before swinging. Being aware of it will help you hit more predictable shots and avoid those nasty surprises on the course.

Pressure Situations

Have you ever thought hitting your first shot in a tournament in front of three unknown golfers is stressful? Try hitting your stray shot in front of a whole wedding reception looking on and commenting on your style 🤣

Deals for the Feels

Sales are rolling in, but this is the time to be patient and wait for really good deals.

  • Buy two accessories from Puma and pay only one! This deal covers everything from hats, socks, belts, towels, and gym bags to their Bluetooth speaker. Some items are already marked down, making this a pretty sweet deal. But hurry—this ends today! 🤷‍♂️

  • I stumbled upon this Vegas-themed collection featuring a new TP5 design and two putter headcovers. The headcovers aren’t available (yet?), and it’s not even linked on their homepage, so this might be a soft release happening later today or over the weekend. Keep your eyes peeled—it looks sharp!

  • Big price drops at a store that rarely offers good deals! Major brands like Nike, J. Lindberg, Polo Ralph Lauren, and even clubs (Callaway, Ping, Titleist, etc.) are heavily discounted. But if you’re eyeing new clubs, I’d recommend waiting until October–January for the absolute best deals.

  • It’s discount season for Rick Shiels gear too. If you're a fan, now might be a good time to check it out!

Overpowered Golf Ball

It’s no secret that today’s drives are benefitting from tech advancements, making them go farther than ever. This short documentary dives into the evolution of golf balls and how courses are being forced to adapt to the insane distances we’re seeing—even in the amateur world.

The vibe of this video is on point. It blends nostalgia with the excitement of how our sport is evolving, pushing even the courses and clubs to keep up.

Video length: 10:39

TL;DW:

  • Wooden balls → Feathery balls → ProV1

  • Courses are getting longer to handle the new power

That’s the gist, but honestly, it’s not the details that matter here - it’s this video's vibe. If you’re feeling stressed, sit back, relax, and soak it in. You won’t regret it.

Quiz answer

The shortest hole in the world is the 8th at the Extreme 19th at Legend Golf & Safari Resort in South Africa. It is just 130 yards, but the tee box is on a cliff 400 meters (1,312 feet) high, making the shot incredibly challenging. Have fun on your descent to find your lost ball.

Sincerely, your Magic Rabbit.

Leader through the rabbit hole. Would act like the ball isn’t his at that wedding reception. “Yeah it’s lost.”
