This Week I Learned

Golf Burnout is Real.
After taking a 3-week break from swinging a club, I feel better about my golf game than I have in months. It gave me time to reflect on the season, and now I’m pumped to enjoy the last few months of this golden golf fall. Let’s go y’all!

Useless golf videos we’ve watched this week, so you don’t have to:

Putting Out of Your Mind

“If only you put as much focus into your putting as you do when teeing off, I wouldn’t beat you.”

That’s what a so-called “friend” told me after we hadn’t played together in a while. And unfortunately… he’s right. My putting is terrible, and I need to fix it ASAP so he never beats me again!

On one hand, I need to spend more time practicing putting. On the other hand, like any true golfer, I’ll also spend hours watching YouTube videos on putting and dream of beating my “friend” with the help of the tips from this video:

  • Stable Lower Body - Grab an alignment stick. After getting into your putting stance, rest the stick against the side of your back thigh. If it drops during your putt, your lower body’s moving too much. This tip is especially crucial for longer putts.

  • Use Your Eyes - During your practice swings, look at the hole and gauge how much speed you’ll need. Seems logical but too many of us rush into the putt without first getting a feel for the distance. Also, visualize the line your ball should roll after it leaves the clubface.

  • Line Up Your Ball - Most balls have a small line you can use to aim. If yours don’t, grab a ball marker stencil for a few bucks on Amazon. Once you’ve lined it up, use your putter’s center line to sync everything up.

  • Process, Not Outcome - We’ve heard it a million times—focus on the process, not the result. Guilty as charged: the closer I get to the hole, the worse my putts become because of the pressure I put on myself. The goal? Nail the process, and let the outcome take care of itself.

Next time I’m on the putting green, I’ll definitely try the alignment stick drill to see how stable my body is. And mentally? It’s a work in progress, but seeing how far I’ve come since the start of the season is proof the effort is paying off.

  • GoodGood just dropped their branded AI Smoke Driver. If you’ve been eyeing the AI Smoke and are a fan of GoodGood, this one’s for you! Quick heads-up though: these are nearly sold out, so act fast if you want one.

Angle Your Clubs

I never realized how much the angle of my club affects where the ball goes. After watching this quick 20-second video, it finally clicked how big of an impact the club’s angle has on my ball’s trajectory.

Video length: 0:20

  • Steeper Handle Angle:
If you have a steeper club angle, your shots will tend to go more to the right (for right-handers).

  • Lower Handle Angle:
If your handle is closer to the ground, your ball will fly to the left.

This is something I’ll be testing out during my next range session to see how it impacts my swing. Maybe shallowing out my club’s lie is the key to fixing my slice. It’s worth a shot - and worth the 20 seconds to check out this Short!

Quick Bites for the Road

👀 Elite Athletes See The World Differently - This 20-minute documentary dives into what separates elite athletes from even very good ones. Spoiler alert: it’s all about their eye movement. There are golf-specific examples, especially when putting—they lock on the ball for longer, and it makes a huge difference.

📏 Does a higher tee really give more distance? - GolfDigest has a short but informative read on the impact of tee height. The verdict: yes, it does matter! Higher tees give you more distance, but with greater dispersion. Check out the article for more insights on how tee height affects your shots.

🛠️ Testing 50 Viral Golf Hacks - A fun and entertaining 15-minute video where they test some of the wildest golf “hacks” (‘cabbage on your head reduces sweat’ did someone really try this? o_O).

Watch LPGA to get better

A short (53 seconds) but excellent video: Why you should watch LPGA. Short answer: women set a more realistic picture of how we average folks should swing instead of trying to emulate Bryson and his freakish swing. LPGA players swing the club smoothly instead of blasting it with full power. Watch the video for some great examples.

Quiz

What famous rule change occurred after a golfer played a ball that landed on a slice of cheese?

👇 Answer see below 👇

If you liked this newsletter, refer it to a friend. If you hated it, send it to the ONE person you desperately want to beat (on the course).

Quiz answer

The incident led to the introduction of the "Cheese Rule," officially known as the "Embedded Ball Rule," which allows players to lift and drop a ball without penalty if it lands in any artificial, unusual condition, such as food.

But why has nobody questioned how that slice of cheese got on the course in the first place?

Sincerely, your Magic Rabbit.
