Plus: Snake Prank Deluxe
What's up? ID4+1 is the best day to golf.
What we'll cover this week
More Distance: Because why not?
Snake Prank: I cried tears!
Think Like a Pro: Stuff we tend to forget.
Estimated read time: 7 minutes
This Week I Learned
I need to stand way further back when I putt.
My coach busted out the Putting Plates and discovered I was too close to the ball to see the line straight.
Useless golf videos weāve watched this week, so you donāt have to:
20 = 243 minutes saved
Also, big congrats to Marcus from Berlin, MD, for winning the referral contest from two weeks ago and snagging five six-packs of Stars & Stripes Pro V1s. Nice job!
The Art of Long Drives
Thereās no better feeling than crushing a drive on the range and hearing that gasp of admiration from the golfer beside you.
Enter Matty from Golf Sidekick with this weekās video. Despite the title, itās not just for 40-year-olds - we can all benefit from more distance.
Video length: 11:41
TL;DW:
Get a Coach: Some naturals donāt need a coach to become scratch golfers. Then thereās us. A coach can guide us and shorten our learning curve.
Hip Rotation: Like Matty, I never truly understood ārotate your hips.ā Think of starting a lawn mower; thatās the right hip movement.
Address Position ā Impact Position: These two positions arenāt the same, and many golfers misunderstand this.
Custom Fitted Shaft & Driver Head: Never had a club fitting but want more distance? This is the easiest solution. All my clubs are fitted, and the difference is huge.
No Mechanical Thoughts: We always hear this, but still do it. Matty suggests visualizing a feeling you want to recreate, like swinging a heavy hammer down on your ball instead of the lightweight club. Gravity will do the rest.
Find Your Golf Ball: Like Matty, I tested all kinds of golf balls (on the green, short game, driver, and simulator) and now only play those. Playing a found ball usually ends in disaster. Find your personal ball type and stick to it.
These are essential tips that work for everyone. I donāt believe in overly specific YouTube swing tips - I leave those to my coach for me to improve. Thatās why theyāre not in the TL;DW.

Think like a Pro
Having the 'perfect' swing is less important than knowing how to develop a solid course strategy.
This video is a great reminder of all the things we should do on the course but always seem to forget. Little things like finding a close target to align with tend to get lost among all the mechanical swing thoughts, but they are equally important for having a good round.
Video length: 31:29 (video starts at 2:42 without the lengthy intro)
TL;DW
Find a Close Target: Pick a target in the distance (tree, bird, rock) and draw a mental line to your ball. Find something close to your ball on that line (blade of grass, pebble, old tee) and aim for that closer target instead of the far distance. This especially helps with blind shots.
Understand the Make Rate: If you expect to hit a shot even a pro would struggle with, you're setting yourself up for failure. Avoid hero shots. A great mental reminder for me is asking, āIs this a hero shot?ā It helps avoid stupid mistakes or at least makes me aware that it might backfire.
Avoid Double-Bogeys+: Your goal shouldnāt be to birdie every hole but to avoid double-bogeys. Theyāre too hard to recover from without outstanding play, so play conservatively and avoid risky shots, especially around the green.
Flow of Water: When you have trouble reading a green, pretend youāre pouring water on it. Most people find it easier to visualize the water flow than to "read the green."
Speed is All That Matters: Instead of obsessing over the perfect line, focus on getting the ball as close to the hole as possible. When I practice putting, 90% of my time is spent on distance control.
Overlap in Club Distance: Your clubs have no dramatic cut-off distance. Depending on your swing, thereās overlap between, say, a 7 and 8 iron. Use the club that covers most of the green on approach shots.

The video teaches these and other things, but itās also jam-packed with great insights from one of the most prominent course strategy experts.
Quick Bites for the Road
š¬ Tech Marvels for PGA Coverage - MKBHD takes us behind the scenes of PGA media production to show how everything we see is made. Itās mind-blowing that with all that equipment, they still struggle with decent post-event highlightsā¦ (yes, Iām salty).
š $100 vs. $1,000 Wedges - Are custom-made wedges really 10x better than Kirkland wedges? Spoiler alert: obvious answer, but this video is still super informative. I wouldāve loved to see a comparison with some standard wedges from Titleist, Ping, etc. (Jump straight to the conclusion here)
š¦ Inside the Largest Golf Club Collection: Some call it hoarding, others (like me) call it heaven š This guy has it allāMaster winnersā clubs, presidential clubs, Moon Balls, millions of prototype Scotty Camerons, clubs from 1840...
