This Week I Learned

People asking “What’s your handicap?” have no idea how the handicap system works, so it’s safe to lie.

Long Clubs Mishits

“Why do I ALWAYS slice my 5 iron!”

You know the feeling - you’re nailing your 9 iron, hitting those sweet shots with your 7, but the moment you need more distance, you hesitate to pull out your 5 iron or, heaven forbid, your driver!

This video finally explains why your longer clubs don’t behave like your shorter ones, and it’s been baffling me for ages.

Video length: 8:57 (I cut out the intro as usual)

TL;DW:

  • Club Path: If your club’s path is off, mishits are inevitable. Higher lofted clubs (like your 9 iron) are more forgiving because they generate more backspin, keeping your shots stable.

  • Loft: The lower the loft, the more an open or closed clubface messes with your shot. That’s why your 5 iron or driver is more sensitive to face angle than your trusty shorter irons.

  • Deviation of Path & Loft: When your club path and loft don’t line up, the ball’s flight axis tilts, and that’s where the slice or hook comes from.

  • Tilt: The more tilt, the more off-course your shots go. Longer clubs amplify this effect, making them trickier to control.

Solution: If your longer clubs are giving you grief with slices or hooks, it’s time to adjust your path or clubface angle. It’s not just your 5 iron acting up—your lower lofted clubs simply reveal your swing flaws more. Refine that swing, and those longer clubs will start behaving!

I found this video super insightful because I’ve always had (and hopefully soon “had”) a love-hate relationship with my 5 iron. Now I realize it’s my tendency to slightly open the face on impact—something that’s affecting ALL my clubs, not just my demon-possessed 5 iron!

(my editor suggested putting demon-possessed in quotes, which would suggest I’m not serious about this character trait of my 5 iron. I am dead serious.)

Best Golf Course In The World

Sometimes, stepping out into the world helps us appreciate what we have when we come back. But if you ever play on this course, you might find it hard to play anywhere else again.

Rick Shiels takes us on a round at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. This club is ranked as the best golf course in the world by many, and it’s easy to see why.

Video length: 39:28

This video is a bit longer, but trust me—it’s worth every second. I initially planned to just take a quick peek, but I ended up watching the whole thing.

Royal County Down is home to this year’s Irish Open, and Rory McIlroy himself is a member. Watching this, I felt like I was on a course in Hawaii, with stunning sea views and a breathtaking mountain range in the distance.

The fairways and greens are pristine, and while the roughs look manageable, there’s a reason this course has a high difficulty rating. I can already picture myself zig-zagging all over the place, but what a marvelous experience that would be!

To give you a taste, here’s the view from the 4th tee box.
