This Week I Learned
Balance is EVERYTHING.
After binge-watching hundreds of conflicting YouTube golf videos, I unconsciously developed the habit of shifting my weight onto my toes before every swing. The results? Let’s not talk about it.
The other day, I had another lesson with my local pro, and he was quick to point out my imbalance. Now that I’ve recentered my balance back to the middle of my feet, my game is much more enjoyable!
Useless golf videos we’ve watched this week, so you don’t have to:

Golf Course Inside Prison
Golf is a weird sport.
Some people are so obsessed with golf that they'll go to extreme lengths to play as much as possible. The warden of Louisiana's largest maximum-security prison recognized this passion and built a golf course for his prison staff, which the inmates maintain.
Video length: 10:50
This prison is larger than Manhattan and houses 6,300 inmates. The groundskeeper, a convicted murderer, has been in jail for 18 years (at the time of recording). He describes his job as “the best of a bad situation.”
When I first saw the warden, I had flashbacks to all the mean wardens from TV shows, but this man is really down to earth and understands true rehabilitation. Part of this rehabilitation involves maintaining the golf course, which is surprisingly beautiful, considering it was designed by the prison’s dentist - a complete amateur in golf course design.
The video is a fun watch and exudes the Southern flair you'd expect from Louisiana. Despite the tough circumstances, the energy is positive and leaves you with a good, albeit mixed, feeling because, well, it's still a golf course inside a prison 🤷♂️
One question remains: Should inmates be allowed to play golf on the course they maintain? What do you think?

Not even a broken leg can stop this dude from teeing off. Maybe it should’ve…

Chipping onto the Green
Not confident about your chipping skills? It doesn’t have to be that way.
Here's one of Danny Maude's brilliant tutorials that has boosted my confidence in chipping. Confidence is half the battle when it comes to mastering this skill.
Video length: 11:54

Pendulum Motion: The club should move like a pendulum. I even imagine a TikTok sound in my head when I chip.
No Forward Shaft Lean: Avoid leaning the shaft forward, or you'll bury the leading edge of your wedge into the ground.
Butt of Club Rises: As you make contact, the butt of the club should slightly rise towards your hip, allowing for a more accurate ball flight.
Be Decisive: Don't be too careful. Give the ball a solid “pop” to ensure it has enough energy to reach your target.
Especially the last tip is what usually screws up a chip for me. When I’m unsure and not confident, I end up with a dreaded double-chip.
