This Week I Learned

Do the opposite.

While hitting drives on the range, my usual slice was as persistent as ever. Closing the clubface helped a bit, but it wasnā€™t enough to fix it.

Then I remembered something Iā€™d seen online: ā€œTo fix a tendency, try doing the opposite.ā€ So, I aimed to hit a hook. You wouldnā€™t believe what happened next: straight drives with a nice little fade. Letā€™s see if I can make that stick for once.

If only everything in golf were that simple.

300 Days of Golf

Cheeky Golf Club set out on an epic quest: play every day until they make 18 pars in a row.

Their recap after 300 days is both inspiring and entertaining as you watch the three brothers look back on their journey.

Video length: 36:38

TL:DW

Does a TL:DW even make sense? YES! The brothers share 5 valuable lessons from their 300 days of non-stop golf.

  • Playing Golf Doesnā€™t Make You Better - Ouch. A hard truth for those who avoid practice. Playing 300 days straight wonā€™t improve your game if youā€™re not practicing with intent. Work on your weak spots and sharpen your strengths instead of just hoping time on the course will do the trick.

  • Process > Outcome - Itā€™s been said a million times, but itā€™s still true. Focus on the process, not the score. Bad rounds happenā€”learn from them, and youā€™ll not only play better over time but actually enjoy golf more.

  • Itā€™s Hard Before it Gets Better - Progress isnā€™t immediate, and long stretches without visible results can feel discouraging. Stick with it. Sometimes, adjusting your approach or working with a coach is the boost you need.

  • Play With Friends - Golf is better with good company. ā€œIf you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.ā€

  • Perspective - At the end of the day, itā€™s just golf. Even pros feel good about hitting only 3-4 shots perfectly in a round. Celebrate the small wins, accept the imperfect ones, and keep having fun.

Hero Shot Gone Wrong

This is why we say to avoid hero shots. ā€œThat gap between the trees is massive!ā€ Famous last words.

Hero Shot Gone Dong

Feeling generous today, so hereā€™s another gem for your laugh-and-cringe collection. Bullseye? More like ballseye. Iā€™ll see myself out now. nervous laugh

Deals for the Feels

Have you been outside? Sure is a cold night. How about a little discount spree on a night this clear?

  • Massive discounts happening today only at TGW. Deals include apparel, shoes, bags, clubs (PING G430 Max), balls, gloves, and even SkyTrack Launch Monitors. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Use code ā€œSavingsā€ at checkout for an extra 15% discount on most items. Excludes PING, but still a great way to stack savings on already discounted gear.

  • GoodGood just launched a desert-themed collection, but ironically, the gear is mostly greenā€”shirts, caps, hoodies, and more. They look fantastic, though, so itā€™s worth a peek.

  • The T100 ā€“ T350 irons just got a limited edition all-black makeover. These irons look absolutely insaneā€”arguably the best-looking clubs out there right now.

Better Practice Sessions

Winter golf is all about making the most out of practice.

Iā€™ve got a 25-session flatrate package this season, so Iā€™m laser-focused on squeezing as much improvement as possible out of every session. Last year, my range time was basically a ball-smashing free-for-all. This year? Smarter. (Most of the time.)

This video breaks down how to level up your range sessions:

Video length: 11:50 (you can easily watch this at 2x speed)

TL:DW

  • No Block Practice - Hitting the same shot over and over with the same club = Wasted time. Once youā€™re warmed up, switch gears. Absorbing feedback is where ā€œthe magic happensā€ (what is it with these silly wordplays today?!ā€).

  • Intent & Feedback - Every shot needs a purposeā€”whether itā€™s targeting a specific spot, shaping a shot, or dialing in consistent distances. Analyze each shot: Did you achieve what you intended? Pause. Adjust.

  • Randomize Your Practice - Change your club and target with every shot. This forces you to focus and realign for each swing, mimicking real course conditions.

  • Impact Training - Center-face contact is king. Use foot spray or impact stickers to see where youā€™re striking the ball. The goal is to develop a feel for center hits versus toe or heel strikes so you can diagnose and correct during play.

  • Experimental Practice - Ask yourself, ā€œWhat happens if I do xyz?ā€ Try deliberately hooking or slicing with different clubs. This offseason, experimenting has helped straighten my regular shots.

  • Do The Opposite - Remember this weekā€™s learning about fixing tendencies by doing the opposite? Turns out I subconsciously lifted it from this video. Whoops. Itā€™s still gold.

  • Tempo Training - Jon suggests using the Tour Tempo app to perfect a 3:1 swing speed ratio with audio cues.

By following these tips, your range sessions will be more productive and focused. This isnā€™t about hitting more balls; itā€™s about getting better results with the ones you hit.

šŸ§ā€ā™‚ļø Best Stand Bags of 2025 - MyGolfSpy released their annual stand bag review, and surprise, surpriseā€”the Ping Hoofer is the champ again. Seriously, I canā€™t say enough good things about this bag. Itā€™s leagues ahead of anything else Iā€™ve tried. If the Hoofer isnā€™t your thing, the article also highlights some other great options worth checking out.

Quiz answer

Sand Hills native wiregrass, used on some of its roughs and edges for its resilience and authenticity. Wonā€™t make a difference when you canā€™t find your ball in the regular type of ā€œaaaand itā€™s goneā€-rough.
