This Week I Learned

Tee Height + Position Determine Your Drive

How high you tee the ball and how far forward in your stance it is determines if you’ll hit your drive low, mid, or high. This article - and the photo in it - was a real eye-opener for me. Higher tee & closer to the heel = high bomb. Lower tee & further from the heel = low shot.

This is super handy when you’re playing into the wind and want to keep the ball low to avoid it getting caught and pushed off-course.

Useless golf videos we’ve watched this week, so you don’t have to:

Friendly Reminder

We’ve probably forgotten most of what we’ve ever learned about golf. That’s why I love these “I wish I knew this when I was a beginner” videos—they’re a quick reminder of the things we should do, but sometimes just forget.

In this video, a few lessons stood out to me as especially important to remember, so take a quick look:

  • Bump and Run Whenever You Can: Few amateur golfers consistently land their wedges where they want. The bump-and-run is much easier to execute and more reliable for consistent play.

  • Tee on the Correct Side: When teeing up, do it on the side of the hazard and aim away from it (based on your shot shape). This creates a buffer between you and the hazard. If you tee up on the opposite side, you’re more likely to launch your ball straight into trouble.

  • Read the Green from Both Sides: Greens can be deceptive, so read them from both sides of the flag to verify your initial read.

  • Clean the Grooves: Regularly clean the grooves on your wedges to maintain spin. Dirty grooves mean less spin, which can be a big problem for wedge shots.

  • Ball Position on a Slope: When the ball is above your feet, it will tend to draw more. When it’s below your feet, expect extra fade. I tend to forget this, but maybe this reminder will finally make it stick!

The video has 15 more quick knowledge nuggets, but these were the most important ones for me to remember.

The Truth About Buying Clubs

His reasoning is flawless, and he’s 100% right. But... it’s just so much fun buying new clubs and convincing ourselves that we’re about to play better from now on. ;)

Deals for the Feels

Make some space in your wallet by spending cash on great deals.

  • Even though everyone is obsessed with the AI Smoke right now, the Paradym is just as good - if we’re being honest (see the video above 😉). Getting a Paradym for ‘just’ $399 instead of $599 for an AI Smoke is definitely the better choice for our wallets.

  • I’ve said it before and’ll say it again: Adidas Golf pants are 🔥. You can wear them all year, and they’re super comfortable while giving you the flexibility you need for a perfect swing. Snagging these (plus other apparel items) for 25-60% off is a total steal!

  • Major footwear brands (Callaway, FootJoy, Adidas, etc.) are between 30-60% off at TGW. Judging by the wear and tear on my shoes from this season, it might be the perfect time to grab some new ones.

Best Long Club?

The debate is as old as golf itself: 4 iron, hybrid, or fairway wood - which one is right for you?

The answer is simple: it depends.

It depends on your swing, your comfort level, and your game. This video offers a solid breakdown of why this particular creator loves his choice, but remember, everyone’s swing is different—what works for him may not work for you. Give it a look:

In essence, your choice hinges on your club head speed. And seriously—get a club fitting (most stores offer store credit for booking one) before grabbing just any club off the shelf.

As a general rule:

  • High club head speed & great iron control: Go for a 4 iron.

  • Medium to high club head speed (but not-so-great iron control): Opt for a fairway wood.

  • Low to medium club head speed: A hybrid is your best friend.

The differences are subtle and depend on what you’ve already got in your bag and what you actually use out on the course. Personally, I’m not a fan of those tiny hybrid heads—they don’t look right to me, which affects my confidence. It’s all part of the mental game, so trust your gut. On the other hand, if my 5 iron was spraying shots all over, I wouldn’t even think about picking up a 4 iron.

Bottom line: Get a club fitting. ;)

Ever wonder if those shots at the range translate to your performance on the course? Well, spoiler alert: they don’t. Range balls are great for practice, but if you’re measuring club distances or—heaven forbid—playing a round with them, you’re doing it wrong. Check out why!
