This Week I Learned

Misaligning Alignment Sticks

For the longest time, I thought proper alignment meant setting up straight to the target line using alignment sticks and keeping my body parallel to them. Turns out I was wrong, as usual.

Here’s what I got wrong: a proper stance actually has your body slightly open relative to your target. If you align everything dead straight, you're unintentionally closing yourself off—causing shots to leak off-target even when your swing path is solid.

I wondered why the simulator always showed me a perfectly straight path, but my ball wasn’t going where I aimed. Now I know—I wasn’t actually aiming properly.

Fix: Instead of blindly trusting alignment sticks, take aim with your front eye and use the sticks as a reference rather than something to align your body perfectly parallel to. A subtle shift, but it makes all the difference.

Quarter Trick

Sometimes, the simplest training aids work best—and this one costs less than a dollar.

For the price of a quarter, you can stabilize your grip, which in turn fixes a whole range of swing issues. There’s a reason Ben Hogan made grip fundamentals the first chapter in Five Lessons. Today’s video might make you a believer, too.

Video length: 3:15

TL:DW

  • Pinch a Quarter - Place a quarter between your thumb and index finger while gripping the club. Then take a swing. That’s it.

  • Balance at the Top - The quarter trick forces your trail hand to stay stable at the top of your backswing. If your trail hand wobbles, your entire club path becomes unpredictable.

  • More Control, Less Chaos - Even if you don’t have the exact issue shown in the video, this drill gives instant feedback on grip stability, and stable hands mean a stable swing.

I tested it at the range, and the difference was obvious. My swing felt way more controlled, even if the rest of my game is still a work in progress. Small tweak, big impact.

Death Wish

Now repeat after me: I WILL NOT STAND IN FRONT OF A TEE SHOT!!!! ☠️

Deals for the Feels

Spring is here, and that means deals are drying up fast. If you still need gear, now’s the time before prices climb back up.

  • The best stand bag in golf? On sale? Yep. The latest PING Hoofer models are down from $275 to $234—probably not for long. If the Hoofer isn’t your style, check out discounts on Titleist, Ogio, Sun Mountain, and push carts over at TGW.

  • Last chance for good ball deals before summer price hikes. ProV1s (previous season), Callaways, and TP5s are all discounted. Don’t be the guy complaining about full-price balls in July when you had the chance to stock up now.

  • Classic style meets modern performance. This collection is for those who appreciate timeless golf fashion. Sadly, it doesn’t come with an Arnold Palmer in hand—but at least you’ll look sharp while ordering one at the clubhouse.

Pre-Round Warmup

Do you have a proper pre-round routine? Yeah… me neither.

Most days, I just hit a few balls, roll a couple of putts, and head straight to the first tee. On tournament days, it’s a different story, but even then, my warmup is inconsistent.

That changes today.

From now on, I’m following Trevor Dunn’s 1-hour pre-round routine. It’s simple, structured, and should help me avoid those “why am I so stiff for the first five holes?” moments.

Video length: 1:30

TL:DW

  • 5-Footers - Make 10 in a row. Use tees as a gate to ensure your putter stays on line.

  • Chipping Warmup - 5-10 minutes. Place a towel as a landing target to dial in feel and get a sense of green speed.

  • Short-Side Chips - Place your bag at the green’s edge and chip over it. This helps commit to a clean strike instead of the classic “I don’t want to launch it across the green” hesitation that leads to duffs.

  • Range Routine - 10-15 wedge shots, 10-15 mid irons, 5-10 shots with your fairway finder, and finish with a few driver swings.

If I stick to this, my first few holes might actually be playable for once.

Quick Bites for the Road

Peter Finch’s Quest the British Open (Part 1) - Peter’s back on his mission to qualify for the British Open, and his approach this year is even more methodical. The video gives a great insight into what he's tweaking in his game to improve from last season. If you love the grind of competitive golf, this is a must-watch.

Phil Mickelson What’s In The Bag - Phil’s bag setup is something else. The level of detail that goes into each club selection is mind-blowing. Two 5 irons—but one with a higher trajectory? Meanwhile, I just wish my 5 iron had one predictable distance. Pros really do play a different game.

Catching Golfers Lying at the PGA Show - The Divot Dudes hit the PGA Show to call out some… optimistic golfers on their numbers. If you see these two, you’d better know your actual yardages—because they won’t let you get away with claiming a 300-yard carry when you’re barely breaking 230.

It’s the lowest golf course in the world, sitting at 214 feet below sea level. That means my drives would zoom around at 213 feet below sea level.
