Plus: Stupid Idea Teeing Off at Topgolf

What's up? Is your bag too heavy? Loose more balls.

What we'll cover this week

  • Hand-Made Clubs - I need a loan

  • Golf in 4 Shots - Golf gods hate us

  • Master the Downswing - grease your elbow

This Week I Learned

There’s a rule prohibiting (clear) water bottles on the green.

The bottle could be used to get the level of the break of the green, so I guess that makes sense. [USGA Rule 4.3a(1)/1]

Useless golf videos we’ve watched this week, so you don’t have to:

Hand-Made Golf Clubs

These could be the best golf clubs in the world.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better than these hand-made, 100% custom-fitted wedges, irons, and putters. The company featured in this week’s video started making clubs for none other than Ben Hogan. A few years later, Nike bought them to custom-fit clubs for unknown golfers like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Michelle Wie.

Video length: 16:58

The company, then known as The Oven, produced wedges exclusively for Nike until 2016 when Nike stopped making clubs. That’s when Artisan was born, the club maker for the stars.

The documentary is a great watch if you’re into the behind-the-scenes stuff of golf. It also highlights a typical small business that’s the backbone of the US economy, focusing on craftsmanship and authenticity.

When you prioritize quality over quantity, you end up with a customer wall of fame featuring names like Michael Jordan, George Strait, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and many more.

This video has such a mellow Texas vibe and offers an amazing look behind the curtain of the golf industry. It shows how seemingly small things can have a big impact on your game. Unfortunately, the price tag is a bit out of my range, but one day… one day...

If you want to check out Artisan and their products, here’s their shop with putters priced around $950 - $1,000 ;)

Mastering the Downswing

It’s time for another one of Danny Maude’s masterful videos on how to improve your iron striking.

Video length: 9:28 (I cut out the intro for you)

In the video, Danny demonstrates an easy-to-replicate motion to help you understand what to do with your trail elbow during the downswing.

TLDW

  • Extend Your Trail Hand Holding a Club: Hold your arm parallel to the ground extended before you.

  • Bend Your Elbow to Almost 90°: As you do that, the club will fall over your back shoulder.

  • Drop Your Elbow Down: Reverse the previous motion and drop your elbow down.

  • Club Follows the Elbow: The club will follow the movement. Avoid gripping too hard to get a better feel for the club.

That’s it! As you can see, it’s a straightforward drill. The key part is this:

Visualize the Motion: During your downswing, visualize your elbow dropping the same way, just to the side. This happens when you start turning your hips.

It sounds so easy, but this exercise had an IMMEDIATE effect on my iron swing. Suddenly, my shots flew straighter and further.

Previously, my leading elbow led the downswing. Now, my trail elbow compresses my core, resulting in a more predictable and consistent outcome.

Quiz answer

Jack Nicklaus won his last PGA event on April 7, 1996, at “The Tradition” on the Senior PGA Tour. This victory marked his (official) 100th career win.

His last PGA Tour win was at the Masters in 1986 (his 6th time winning the event).
